Peak District B&B Near Chatsworth House: Buxton International Festival 2017

This festival‚ which takes place between 7th and 23rd July‚ has been named as one of 2017's top 50 must see events around the globe by music critics at The Times.  The festival itself features Opera‚ Music and Books.  

There’s a history and politics theme to this year’s Book Festival with Lucy Worsley on Jane Austen‚ David Starkey on Henry VIII‚ and figures including Jeremy Paxman‚ Chris Patten‚ Nick Clegg‚ Paddy Ashdown‚ Margaret Hodge‚ Richard Dannatt and Alan Johnson reflecting on the current state of Britain today‚ alongside subjects including art dealers‚ Renaissance princes‚ the Queen‚ Thomas Telford‚ the Iraq War‚ the Brexit campaign and remarkable manuscripts; as well as actress Patricia Routledge‚ vicar and broadcaster Rev Richard Coles and novelist Joanne Harris (both in a talk and in concert with her ‘Storytime’ band).

This year’s Festival operas bring tales of tragedy‚ comedy and redemption. Shakespearen tragedy in the original‚ 1847 version Verdi’s Macbeth‚ Benjamin Britten’s comedy of small-town manners‚ Albert Herring‚ and a tyrant redeemed by love in the 16-year-old Mozart’s Lucio Silla.  The festival will also be hosting the only performance in England of Music Theatre Wales’ new Welsh-language opera Y Twr; Helios Collective’s follow-up to Hathaway‚ Il Letto and the ever-popular Scenes from an Opera.

There is a full music programme. World-class classical soloists including pianists Paul Lewis‚ Melvyn Tan‚ Christian Blackshaw and Imogen Cooper; guitarist Andrey Lebedev‚ cellist Raphael Wallfisch‚ and violinist Joo Yeon Sir; singers Roderick Williams‚ Sarah Connolly‚ Sir John Tomlinson‚ Alwyn Mellor and Paul Nilon
Internationally renowned ensembles including The Brodsky Quartet‚ The English Concert‚ The Fitzwilliam Quartet‚ The Consone Quartet‚ Quatuor Mosaiques‚ three concerts from the Northern Chamber Orchestra and The Endellion String Quartet. All these and more bring musical variety to Buxton.
